You know what? The more I think about this, the more I realize...
I bet a lot of these cheerleaders hang on to WP so ferociously because, if it ever "takes off," they can say they "know" the CEO personally and that they helped launch it. That's what I always thought about WP1, for sure. People rabbled for Ray's attention on the FAS boards, desperate to be associated with WP. To be recognized by Ray. To be "known." I'm sure it still holds true for WP2. It seems like a lot of people would love to "know" someone socially perceived to be important.

Does anyone know where he came up with the name wagglepop?
It always reminded me of an evil Dr. Seuss character. : |

Have you guys checked out the listings lately? Out of about 155,000, almost 60,000 items are books, sports cards, post cards, magazines, mag ads and beads/jewelry. It's absurd. I found a Made in Japan salt and pepper shaker under the category of Egyptian antiques. The #2 store (almost 4900 items) has zero sales, and the #3 store (almost 3700 items) shows two. The #4 store shows 14 FBs, all from the same buyer and all on the same date. The #5 store has 85 FBs, almost half from the same buyer and all but one from another WP store owner. Wow -- I'm impressed. Of course, according to Ray/Karen these stores are selling like crazy but nobody bothers to leave feedback. So show me the completed auctions, you wankers, and prove it.

He liked the way it sounded and it was "different," like "Yahoo, google" etc.
I remember a thread at FAS where people suggested mascots, like a puppy with a balloon tied to its tail.

Yahoo and Google actually WERE REAL words, and had been real words long before the internet was invented. Wagglepop came from who-knows-where. I always thought it would be a great name for popcorn that pops up like confetti or something, but a dopey name for an e-commerce site.

Then again, maybe I'm just looking into things that aren't really the case.
