OT - I am sitting here sobbing right now. I'm trying to be strong. Its not working. My 9 y/o golden retriever is so sick. He has a lump on his shoulder that up until to days ago was small. When he first got the lump 5 years ago, I took him to the vet and the vet said it was most likely just fat and he should be fine.

Well, it has been fine but a few days ago, it swelled to just smaller than 1/2 a baseball (cut in half) and it imploded under his skin. He has these hard spiny lumps like huge varicose veins under his skin. I took him to the vet on monday and he gave him antibiotics and other meds. Dusty was in good spirits on monday and was excited to go bye-bye. He jumped into the car and ran up the steps. The vet said that the inflammation is so bad that he couldn't operate to remove the lump until it came down some for fear of a worse infection.

Now, Dusty won't move, won't walk, won't wag his tail which for a golden is a huge thing. I think he is in major pain because every so often he tenses up and since he won't even lift his head, I can't make another conclusion. He also will eat if I feed him where he's laying. I wrapped his meds in a slice of cheese and he gobbled it down. He's also very thirsty so I'm giving him water with a turkey baster. He hasn't been out to "go" since yesterday at dinner. He really took a turn for the worse overnight.

The vets closed today for appointments. What should I do? How do I deal? By the way, he is very big. He weighs 106 pounds and there is no way I can carry him... Bill said he'd come home from work but I'm scared to death to move him for fear of causing him pain! He's awake and alert and only moves his eyes. If I put my hand anywhere near the lump, his eyes bulge out like he's saying, Please mommy, don't touch it.

I feel so god damned helpless!!!

I would find an emergency vet is quick is you can. I am having a lot of problems with my 15 year old mutt. A vet did not check her ears and she had a middle ear infection she could not walk. I got a secound opinion and it was bad. If I listened to the first vet she would have died.

Platz I am so sorry to hear this.

I think if it was me, I'd find an emergency Vet to take him to. What concerns me is his kidneys could be shutting down and that's an emergency situation that can't wait. Most vets will still see emergencies even on days they're closed for appointments.

To go downhill that quick overnight is not a good sign. Something else is going on and he really needs to be seen as soon as possible. If nothing else it sounds like he needs to be put on IV fluids to prevent dehydration.

The fact he is still taking his meds in food is a good sign, but his overall 'down' demeanor really bothers me.

Platz, I agree 100% with the recommendations of running him in as an emergency. Take Bill up on his offer to come home. Keep trying to get water into him. Find something you can use as a stretcher to move him to minimize his discomfort, preferrably hard surfaced. Put a sheet or large cloth on it as a sling to lift him off and on the board. Get a nieghbour to help move him into your vehicle. GET HIM TO A VET!

Platz how horrible that your pup is not doing well. I am sure if you called your vet they must take emergencies and if not they will refer you to someone. If it is a matter of not being able to move your dog call your fire department. My friends Bull Mastiff became very ill and there was no way for them to get her out of the house (she weighed almost 200 pounds). The fire department came and managed to get the dog on a stretcher and to the vet. It never hurts to make the call.

I will be thinking about you and keep your dog in my prayers. It is so hard when our four legged family members are suffering. Two weeks ago I got the dreaded call from the barn where I board my horse. It seems that when he was out playing with his buddies someone gave him a nice hard kick and severed a vein in his back, inside lower leg. The barn owner had called the vet before contacting me because the blood just would not stop. When I got to the barn there was my horse in the aisle standing in a pool of blood. Thankfully my vet was able to stop the bleeding and put in a few staples but it was touch and go for awhile and we were looking at putting him on a trailer and heading to the equine hospital for surgery. I felt so helpless and out of control. It has been two weeks of hosing, meds and wrapping and the staples finally got removed on Monday. He got the O.K. to return to work.

Try to be strong....I know easier said then done.

Oh Platz.... huge hugs sweetie!

You've been given great advice. You may not be able to get your vet, but most clinics do provide an emergency service with a vet on call. Near us, we also have an emergency clinic that will take any pet at any time. Don't wait!
