How does Community Court work?
    Community Court is run by the eBay Community. Ordinary members of eBay make decisions about whether feedback is fair.
How can I appeal unfair feedback?
    The process is simple and quick: write an appeal saying why you think the feedback is unfair, and wait for the other party to response. You have a chance to respond to their statement, but after that it's up to the jury to decide if your feedback stays or goes.
Who decides what's fair?
    A jury of 100 randomly selected eBayers anonymously vote on the evidence which is submitted. If over 70% of the jury agree that the feedback is unfair, eBay will remove the feedback completely.
How long does it take?
    Voting on a case takes only a few minutes and you can volunteer to vote on as many or as few cases as you want. It's a quick process, so if you're involved in an appeal you'll usually have a decision within a couple of weeks.

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you might be interested in finding out more about a project we’re going to be trialling in the UK.

The feedback system is the key mechanism that underlies every transaction on eBay. Feedback can affect whether members choose to trade with each other, so it’s important for it to be accurate, honest and a true predictor of the kind of experience you’re likely to have.

However, we sometimes hear of Community members who are afraid to leave honest feedback because they don’t want to receive retaliatory negative feedback, particularly if they’ve already had a bad experience in the past. We agree that if members knew they could have retaliatory and unfair negative feedback removed, they’d be more likely to leave accurate and honest feedback, benefiting the entire Community.

As a result, we plan to enable members who feel they’ve received an unfair negative to put their feedback up for a Community vote, and to have their feedback removed if the Community jury votes to remove it. We’re provisionally calling this the “Community Court”. It's not meant to be a substitute for a court of law and won't be used for resolving legal disputes, so you won't need to get your lawyers involved!

We’re still not sure when we’ll formally make the trial available, but we wanted to give you an early opportunity to (a) find out more about the project, (b) ask any questions you might have (after thoroughly reading our FAQs of course!), and © register your interest as a potential jury member.

It will also appeal to the people who base their decision to sell on an alternative auction site on whether or not the site has a "friendly community (forum)". I don't care if a site is fun or about its forum/community features.  I just care about sales.

I doubt if many businesses will find Community Court attractive (when I say "business" I mean actual businesses not people who think that opening an eBay Store and listing a few items automatically means they have a business).

We had expected to launch Community Court in late 2007 and allow members to open their first cases. Community Court has generated a lot of interest and enthusiasm globally, and we were really excited at the prospect of getting it up and running.

Unfortunately, we've had to make some tough choices to ensure that we can focus on initiatives that will have the most impact in 2008. We've decided to postpone the Community Court project indefinitely.
